<text>Custom on Erev Yom Kippur is to ritually slaughter a white rooster in the morning "watch" after Selichot,3 for a thread of divine grace then prevails in the world. It is slaughtered to subdue the supernal severities, and its blood is taken out to "sweeten" the severities. It bears the name Kapparah (expiation), as did the scapegoat.4 Every household member should have a Kapparah—for every male a rooster and for every female a hen. A pregnant woman should take three fowls: a hen for herself, plus a rooster and a hen for the child's unknown gender. See Laws, page 609.</text>
