<english>In the days of Matityahu, Yochanan's son the High Priest, the Hasmonean together with his sons, when the wicked Hellenic government rose against Your people Israel to cause them to forget Your Torah and to transgress the decrees of Your will. Yet You, in Your abundant mercies, stood with them in their hour of distress. You fought their battles, upheld their rights, and took vengeance for the injury done them. You placed the mighty in the grasp of the weak, the numerous in the grasp of the few, the impure in the grasp of the pure, the wicked in the grasp of the righteous, and the wanton sinners in the grasp of those who occupy themselves with Your Torah. A great and holy name You made for Yourself in Your world, and You brought about a great deliverance and redemption for Your people Israel unto this very day. Thereafter Your children entered the shrine of Your House, purified Your Sanctuary, cleansed Your Temple, kindled lights in Your holy courtyards, and established these eight days of Chanukah to render thanks and praise to Your great Name.</english>
