"english": "Rabbi Yishmael says:1 Thirteen principles serve for expounding the Torah: 1. An inference drawn from a lighter premise or more lenient condition to a heavier or more stringent one, and vice versa. 2. A comparison of two statutes founded upon matching phrases in the Biblical text. 3. A general principle drawn from a single Biblical text or from two associated Biblical texts [is applicable to all similar cases, though not specified in detail]. 4. Where a general statement precedes an explicit particular, [the rule is limited to the specified particular]. 5. Where an explicit particular precedes a general statement, [all that is contained in the general rule applies]. 6. Where a general statement precedes a specification and then another general statement, the law applies only to such cases as resemble the specification. 7. Where a general statement needs a stated particular [for the sake of clarity, the general rule is not limited to the specified particular, as in rule 4]. Likewise, where a specification needs a broader statement [for the sake of clarity, the generalization does not have the all-embracing effect, as in rule 5]. 8. Where an instance already covered by a general law is isolated to instruct us concerning something new, it is isolated not merely to teach its own instance, but applies to the entire general law. 9. Where an instance already covered by a general law is isolated to attach a further clause akin to the general law, it is isolated so as to diminish, but not to increase, the severity of that provision. 10. Where an instance already covered by a general law is isolated to attach a further clause unlike the general provision, it is isolated so as, in certain respects to diminish, and in others to heighten, the severity of the provision. 11. Where an instance already covered by a general law is isolated with a new stipulation, that general law's provisions cease to apply to it, unless the Torah expressly states that they do. 12. A passage's meaning may be inferred from its context or from a subsequent passage. 13. Likewise, when two Biblical passages contradict each other, their sense can be settled by a third Biblical text which reconciles them.",
