<english>1. In the Mishnah’s language the Sages taught [this chapter]1; blessed is He who selected them and their instruction. Rabbi Meir said: Whoever engages in [the study of] the Torah for its own sake merits many things; moreover, he is worthy that the entire world should have been created because of him. Friend and beloved is he called; he loves God, he loves [His] created beings; he gladdens God, he gladdens people. [The Torah] clothes him in humility and fear [of God]; it renders him worthy to be a tzaddik [righteous], a chassid, straight and faithful; it distances him from sin and draws him toward meritorious deeds. From him others obtain the benefit of counsel and wisdom, insight and might, as it is stated: Mine are counsel and wisdom; I am understanding, mine is strength.2 [The Torah] confers on him royalty and dominion, and perceptive judgment; Torah’s mysteries are disclosed to him, and he becomes as a spring that flows with ever-growing force and as an unfailing stream.
