Without wisdom there is no fear [of God]; without fear [of God] there is no wisdom. Without knowledge there is no understanding; without understanding there is no knowledge. Without flour [sustenance] there is no Torah; without Torah there is no flour. He would teach: One whose wisdom outstrips his [good] deeds, to what may he be likened? To a tree with many branches yet few roots, so that the wind comes and uproots it and overturns it; as Scripture states: And he shall be as a solitary tree in a dry land, and shall not behold when good arrives; he shall abide on scorched ground in the wilderness, upon salt-land that cannot be inhabited.1 Yet one whose [good] deeds outstrip his wisdom, to what may he be likened? To a tree with few branches yet many roots, so that even should every wind in the world come and beat upon it, they could not dislodge it from its place; as Scripture states: And he shall be as a tree planted beside waters, sending its roots toward the stream, and it shall not sense when the heat arrives, and its foliage shall remain verdant; in a year of drought it shall not be anxious, nor shall it cease from yielding fruit.2",
