<english>To Moses the Lord said: Take sweet spices—stacte, onycha, and galbanum—sweet spices, and frankincense that is pure; of each there shall be equal weight. Fashion it into incense, a mixture skillfully compounded, thoroughly blended, pure and holy. Grind a portion of it exceedingly fine, and place some before the Ark within the Tabernacle, the place I will meet with you; to you it shall be most holy.2 And it is written: Upon the altar Aaron shall burn the incense of fragrant spices; each morning, as he cleans the lamps [of the menorah], he is to burn it. And when Aaron lights the menorah toward evening, he is to burn it; a perpetual incense-offering is this before the Lord throughout your generations.3</english>

<english>Thus have the Rabbis taught:4 In what manner was the incense made ready? Its weight was 368 manim: 365 matching the days of the solar year, a maneh for every day—half a maneh offered at morning and half toward evening; and the remaining three manim from which, on Yom Kippur, the Kohen Gadol took two handfuls [into the Holy of Holies]. These [three manim] were returned to the mortar on the day preceding Yom Kippur and ground once more with great thoroughness, that the incense might be made exceedingly fine.</english>
