<english>אזמר With hymns of praise I shall cut away1 [the forces of evil], so as to pass through the sacred portals of Chakal Tapuchin. We now bid her [the Shechinah] unto the festive board, the lovely candelabrum gleaming upon our heads. From between right and left the Bride draws near, arrayed in ornaments, jewels and robes. Her husband clasps her; by this assembly that gives her joy, the [forces of evil] shall be wholly shattered. They wail and despair, yet they become null and void; yet the faces [of Israel] are made new, souls and spirits likewise. [The Shabbat soul] grants her immense joy, twofold in measure, conferring upon her light and plentiful blessing. Bridesmen, go forth and make ready delicacies of many sorts, fish together with fowl. This is to fashion new souls and spirits, [to fathom] the thirty-two paths [of wisdom] and the three branches [of Scripture]. Seventy crowns are hers; the supernal King is crowned with most sacred [songs of praise]. [The Shabbat] is carved and written throughout all worlds [which were brought forth by] the “Ancient of Days” by joining [the four pristine elements]. May it please Him that His presence dwell upon His people, who shall take delight for His Name's sake in sweet things and honey. Southward I set the mystical candelabrum; northward I place the table with the loaves. With wine in the goblet and myrtle boughs for the Bride and Groom, to strengthen the faint. We form for them crowns of precious words; seventy crowns that rise above the fifty [Gates]. May the Shechinah be encircled by the six loaves on either side [of the table]; and may they answer to the two arrays of six loaves and the remaining articles [of the Bet Hamikdash]. The impure powers distant from holiness, the destroying angels who oppress [man] and all who are confined [in Purgatory] rest and find respite [on Shabbat]. To cut the challah, an olive's size or an egg's, [interpreting] the two yuds by either its plain or phonetic reading. Olives [have within them] pure oil that, when crushed in a millstone, flows in a stream; so too the bread holds within it divine secrets. Let us speak of secrets of Torah, which remain unrevealed, hidden and concealed. May the Bride receive a crown of supernal mysteries at this joyful banquet of the holy angels. ויהא May the will of the most holy Ancient One, hidden beyond all that is hidden and most recondite of all, be that from Him there issue supernal dew to fill the head of Z'eir Anpin and to confer it upon the holy Chakal Tapuchin with joyful countenance, goodwill and great delight.3</english>

<text>1. This Kabbalistic poem and table song is written in the form of an acrostic of the author's name—Ani Yitzchak Luria ben Shlomo (I, Isaac Luria the son of Solomon), popularly known as the Ari Zal or Ari Hakadosh, one of the most famous and influential Kabbalists of the sixteenth century. This profound hymn, chanted at the Shabbat evening meal, replete with Kabbalistic metaphors, is couched in the parlance and style of Zoharic Aramaic. Rabbi Isaac Luria also composed table songs for the other two Shabbat meals, see p. 250 and 270, infra. For a commentary on these poems, which even in the original are incomprehensible to the uninitiated, see R. Yaakov Dov Berkovitch, Eit HaZamir; Siddur Otzar HaTefilot; and Siddur Rabbi Yaakov Emden. For a deeper Kabbalistic exposition, see R. Yaakov Koppel, Siddur Ari Zal, Kol Yaakov.</text>
