          <text>The Shema ought to be said with deep concentration, above all the first two verses wherein we accept the sovereignty of God. Say the first verse aloud, your right hand covering your eyes.</text>

        <body>
          <type>Instructions</type>
          <text>Avoid slurring the ח, and instead stretch it a little for as long as needed to declare God&apos;s reign over the seven heavens and over the earth—a span matching eight, the numerical value of ח. The ד (whose numerical value is four) ought to be stretched through the interval needed to consider that God has no peer in His world and holds sway in every one of the four corners of the universe. In reciting the Shema, halt at the commas so as to yield this sense: Hear O Israel (pause), the Lord who is our God (pause) is the one God. See further laws on page 588.</text>

          <english>And it shall be, if you will diligently hearken to My commandments which I enjoin upon you this day, to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with your whole heart and with your whole soul: I will grant rain for your land at the proper time, the early rain and the late rain, and you will bring in your grain, your wine and your oil. And I will put grass in your fields for your cattle, and you shall eat and be sated. Beware lest your heart be drawn away, and you go astray and worship alien gods and bow down to them. For then the Lord&apos;s wrath will blaze against you, and He will shut the heavens, so rain will fail and the earth will not yield its produce, and you will perish swiftly from the good land which the Lord gives you. Therefore, set these words</english>
