<english>על Beside Babylon's rivers, there we sat down and wept, remembering Zion. Upon the willows there we hung our harps. For there those who captured us demanded songs of us, and those who derided us—rejoicing, [saying,] “Sing to us from Zion's songs.” How shall we sing the Lord's song upon foreign soil? Should I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand lose its skill. May my tongue cling to my palate if I fail to remember you, if I do not recall Jerusalem amid my greatest joy! O Lord, remember against the Edomites the day Jerusalem was destroyed, when they said, “Raze it, raze it to its very foundation!” O Babylon, who are fated to be laid waste, happy is he who will requite you in retribution for the harm you inflicted on us. Happy is he who seizes your infants and crushes them against the rock!2</english>

Then shall our mouth be filled with laughter, and our tongue with joyous song; then among the nations they will say, “Great things has the Lord done for these.” Great things has the Lord done for us; we were joyful. Lord, restore our exiles like streams to parched soil. They who sow in tears shall reap with joyous song.
6</hebrew>
<english>לבני Of the sons of Korach, a psalm, a song whose essential theme is the sacred mountains [of Zion and Jerusalem]. The Lord loves Zion's gates more than all Jacob's dwelling places. Of you, glorious things are spoken, O everlasting city of God. I shall recall Rahav and Babylon as regards My beloved; Philistia and Tyre together with Ethiopia, “This one was born there.” And of Zion it will be said, “This person and that was born there”; and the Most High Himself will establish it. The Lord will reckon in the register of peoples, “This one was born there.” Selah. Both singers and dancers [will sing your praise and say], “All my inmost thoughts concern you.”6</english>
