A cardinal principle of the Torah, and likewise among the high merits of the tzaddikim who proceed before God, consists in this: \"The Lord have I set before me at all times\" (Psalms 16:8). For the bearing and conduct of a man, when alone in his house, differ from those he would display before a great king; so too, one's speech and manner amid his own family circle differ from those shown in a king's presence. How much more elevated, then, will his conduct become once he reflects that the Supreme King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, is stationed above him watching his deeds; as Scripture records (Jeremiah 23:24), \"Can a man conceal himself in hidden places so I would not see him? says the Lord. Are the heavens and the earth not filled by Me?\" Upon contemplating this, he will be filled with reverence and humility, and will constantly feel shame before God.",
