You slayed their firstborn, You redeemed Your firstborn; You divided the sea, You submerged the wicked, You saved Your beloved. Their oppressors the waters engulfed; not one of them survived. Then they sang praises, extolling God for all that had taken place. Songs of thanksgiving, hymns of praise, and blessings the beloved people offered to the ever-living sovereign God, who is transcendent, powerful, and awe-inspiring, who humbles the haughty, lifts up the lowly, frees those in chains, redeems the poor, helps the weak, and answers God’s people when they cry out.</english>

<text>SH’MA AND THE AMIDAH. The Babylonian Talmud links this last b’rakhah of the Recitation of the Sh’ma, mentioning God’s redeeming the people Israel from Egypt, to the personal prayers that now follow in the Amidah, and recommends that there be no verbal interruption at this point (Berakhot 9b). It is as if to say that the possibility of prayer flows out of our experience of God’s love as exhibited in freeing us from slavery.</text>
