<english>A PSALM: THE SONG FOR THE SHABBAT DAY To thank You, Adonai, is good, and to sing to Your name, Most High; to declare Your love at dawn, Your faithfulness each night. Sound the lute, strum the harp, let the lyre’s tone swell upward. You filled me with gladness by Your deeds, Adonai, and I shall hymn Your handiwork. How marvelous Your works, Adonai, how intricate Your designs! The proud cannot grasp it, nor can the fool fathom this: the wicked thrive like grass and every worker of evil blooms, destined for everlasting ruin—yet You, Adonai, stand exalted through all ages. Indeed Your foes, Adonai, indeed Your foes shall perish; all who do evil will be scattered. As a wild bull lifts its horn, You lifted my head high, and anointed it with fresh oil. Though my foes assemble against me, my eye stays firm, for my ears attend and hear: The just bloom like the date palm, grow like a cedar in Lebanon; planted within Adonai’s house, they bloom in our God’s courtyards. Even in old age they stay fruitful, still fresh and abundant, declaring: Adonai is upright, my rock in whom no defect is found.</english>

<text>PSALM 92, the Song of the Day of Shabbat, begins with the praise of the faithful and concludes with it. It remarks on the wonder of creation and on the reward of the righteous, who will be planted in God’s house. Appropriately, the psalm is a song for Shabbat—for Shabbat both celebrates creation and also provides the space in which to experience the peacefulness of one’s soul. The disturbing quality of a world not at ease is put aside—in the words of the psalmist, enemies are “scattered”—and one hears God’s reassurance ringing in one’s ear. (For more detailed commentary on this psalm, see pages 27–28.)</text>

<text>PSALM 93. Having completed the seven psalms culminating in Psalm 92, the Song of the Day of Shabbat, we conclude the section with a psalm announcing God as the supreme monarch. Above nature are God’s laws, moral and holy “testimonies.” In the Torah, the ark is sometimes called “the ark of testimony” because it contains the two tablets given on Mount Sinai.</text>
