<text>Drawing upon Jewish mystical tradition, some keep a daily custom of reciting the scriptural narrative of Isaac's Binding, that highest test of faith wherein Abraham showed his love of God above every other love. Most, on Shabbat and Yom Tov, leave out the opening and closing prayers, "Our God and God of our ancestors" together with "Master of the Universe." Others pass ahead to "A person should" on page 36.</text>

<english>After these things it came to pass that God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, "Abraham!" and he answered, "Here I am." He said, "Take Isaac, your son, your only one, whom you love, and go forth to the land of Moriah, and there offer him as a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains that I shall tell you." Abraham rose early the next morning, saddled his donkey, took with him his two lads and Isaac his son, split wood for the burnt-offering, and set out toward the place of which God had spoken to him. Abraham lifted his eyes on the third day and beheld the place from afar. Abraham told his lads, "Remain here with the donkey, while I and the boy go onward. We shall worship, and then we shall return to you." The wood for the burnt-offering Abraham set upon Isaac his son; the fire and the knife he took in his hand, and the two of them walked on together. Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, "My father?" and he answered, "Here I am, my son." And he said, "See, here are the fire and the wood, but where shall we find the sheep for the burnt-offering?" Abraham answered, "God Himself will see to the sheep for the burnt-offering, my son." And the two of them walked on together. They arrived at the place of which God had spoken to him, and Abraham built an altar there, set the wood in order, bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. He stretched forth his hand and grasped the knife, to slay his son. Then an angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" He answered, "Here I am." He said, "Do not stretch your hand against the boy, nor do a thing to him, for I know now that you fear God, seeing that you have not withheld from Me your son, your only son." Abraham lifted his eyes and beheld a ram, its horns entangled in a thicket; Abraham went, took the ram, and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son. Abraham named that place "The LORD will see," as is</english>
