<english>with the yield of Your work. He causes grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for mankind’s use, that bread may be brought forth from the earth, wine that gladdens man’s heart, oil to brighten the face, and bread that upholds the heart of man. The LORD’s trees drink their fill, Lebanon’s cedars, which He planted. There, birds fashion their nests; the stork nests in the cypresses. The high hills belong to the wild goats; the crags are a refuge for the badgers. The moon He made for marking seasons, and teaches the sun its hour of setting. You send darkness and night comes; then every creature of the woods arises. Young lions roar after prey, looking to God for their food. At the sun’s rising they slip away and rest in their dens. Man goes forth to his work and toils until evening. How many, LORD, are Your works; in wisdom You fashioned them all; Your creations fill the earth. Behold the vast, unmeasured sea with swarming creatures beyond number, living things both great and small. There the ships go forth. Leviathan is there, whom You formed to sport in it. They all look to You in hope, that You give them food in due time. What You grant them they collect. When Your hand opens, they are sated with good. When You conceal Your face, dismay seizes them. When You withdraw their breath, they perish and go back to dust. When You send forth Your breath, they are created, bringing new life to the earth. May the LORD’s glory be for ever; may the LORD delight in His works. When He gazes upon the earth, it quakes. When His touch falls on the mountains, they pour forth smoke. To the LORD I will sing while I live; I will chant psalms to my God throughout my life. May my musing be pleasing to Him; in the LORD I shall rejoice. Let sinners disappear from the earth, and let the wicked exist no more. My soul, bless the LORD. Halleluyah!</english>

<english>A song of ascents. In my distress I called to the LORD and He answered me. “LORD, deliver my soul from lips that lie, from a deceitful tongue.” What profit will a deceitful tongue bring you? What gain will it bring you? Naught but sharp arrows of a warrior, and broom-wood’s glowing coals. Woe is me that I sojourn in Meshekh, that I dwell among Kedar’s tents. Too long have I dwelt among haters of peace. I stand for peace, yet each time I speak of it, they seek war.</english>

<text>the Levites would stand and sing. Others suggest that they were songs sung by the exiles returning from Babylon to Israel (ascending to the holy land). Radak argues that they were said by pilgrims on the three Pilgrimage festivals on their ascent to Jerusalem. Meiri argues that it is a musical direction, meaning a song begun softly and continued with ever-increasing volume. Others speculate that it may be a reference to the particular poetical style in which these psalms are written, in which a repeated phrase serves as a rung on which the poem ascends toward its final theme.</text>

What emerges above all – signaled by both beginning and end, “Bless the LORD, my soul” – is the sense of the Psalmist that despite the vastness of the universe and the infinity of its Creator, He is close. He hears prayer. He attends to the human voice. This is the song of one at home in the world, awed by its beauty, trusting in the graciousness of existence as God’s gift.</text>
