<english>pavilion in the time of trouble. He will conceal me beneath His tent’s covering. He shall place me aloft on a rock. Now my head stands lifted above my enemies who encircle me. With shouts of joy I will offer sacrifice in His tent. I shall sing and chant hymns to the LORD. LORD, listen to my voice as I call. Show me grace and answer me. My heart, on Your behalf, speaks, “Seek My face.” Your countenance, LORD, will I seek. Do not conceal Your face from me. Do not send Your servant off in anger. You have been my aid. Do not cast me off or abandon me, God, my Savior. Should my father and my mother forsake me, the LORD would gather me in. LORD, teach me Your way, and because of those who oppress me, guide me along an even path. Do not leave me to my foes’ desire, for perjurers have risen against me, breathing violence. ▸ Were it not for my trust that I shall behold the LORD’s goodness in the land of the living. Place hope in the LORD. Be strong and take courage, and hope in the LORD!</english>

<english>My soul, bless the LORD. LORD, my God, exceedingly great are You, arrayed in majesty and glory, enfolded in a garment of light. You have stretched out the heavens as a tent. He has set the beams of His chambers upon the waters. The clouds He makes His chariot, riding upon the wind’s wings. He appoints the winds as His messengers, fiery flames as His ministers. He has set the earth upon its foundations, so that it never be shaken. You wrapped it in the deep as in a cloak; the waters stood over the mountains. They fled at Your rebuke; at Your thunder’s sound they hurried off, streaming over the hills, descending into the valleys toward the site You assigned them. You set a bound they were not to cross, lest they cover the earth once more. He sends springs flowing through the valleys; they wind their way among the hills, giving drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys slake their thirst. The birds of the heavens nest beside them, uttering song amid the leaves. From His lofts He waters the mountains: the earth is sated</english>

<text>Psalm 104. Together with the first chapter of Genesis and chapters 38–41 of the book of Job, this psalm is one of the supreme celebrations of creation in Tanakh. Note the profound difference between these religious texts and scientific cosmologies. They speak in poetry, not prose; they express wonder rather than causal explanation; and they testify to the goodness of the world and its Creator rather than to blind, indifferent forces. The account in Psalm 104 is consistent with that of Genesis 1, though it is structured differently because the Psalmist wishes to emphasize the beauty and grandeur of creation rather than the order</text>

<text>Between afternoon and evening services, customs varied. Some communities recited Ethics of the Fathers throughout the year; others between Pesaḥ and Shavuot. Our custom is to do so between Pesaḥ and the Shabbat before Rosh HaShana. Between Shabbat Bereshit and the week before Pesaḥ we recite Psalm 104 and the fifteen psalms known as “Songs of Ascents.” The connection between Shabbat Bereshit and Psalm 104 is that both are about creation. In general, the saying of these psalms during the winter months accords with the tradition that creation took place in the month of Tishrei, while the exodus took place in Nisan (Rosh HaShana 10b). The winter months therefore correspond to the period through which God was known through creation rather than redemption (the exodus) and revelation (the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai).</text>
