<english>As I put on the tefillin I now mean to keep the precept of my Creator who bade us wear tefillin, as His Torah states: "Bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be an emblem on the center of your head." Inside them are these four Torah sections: one that opens with Shema [Deut. 6:4–9]; a second with Vehaya im shamo'a [ibid. 11:13–21]; a third with Kadesh Li [Ex. 13:1–10]; and a fourth with Vehaya ki yevi'akha [ibid. 13:11–16]. These declare that God is unique and one, blessed be His name in the world. They further bring to mind the miracles and wonders He performed for us in bringing us forth from Egypt, and that power and dominion over highest and lowest are His, to act toward them as He wills. He bade us set one tefillin on the arm in remembrance of His "outstretched arm" (of redemption), placing it facing the heart, that our heart's desires and designs be yielded to His service, blessed be His name. Its fellow is to rest on the head, facing the brain, that my mind, seated in the brain, along with my remaining senses and faculties, be yielded to His service, blessed be His name. Let the spiritual influence of the tefillin precept remain with me, granting long life, a stream of holiness, and holy thoughts untouched by any hint of sin or iniquity. Let the evil inclination neither incite nor entice us, but withdraw so we may serve the LORD, as our hearts intend.</english>

<text>Tefillin: The word tefillin (called totafot in the Torah) means "emblem, sign, insignia," the visible symbol of an abstract idea. Tefillin are our reminder of the commandment of the Shema: "Love the LORD your God your with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might" (Deut. 6:5). All your heart: this is the tefillin on the upper arm opposite the heart. All your soul: this is the head-tefillin opposite the seat of consciousness, the soul. All your might: this is the strap of the hand-tefillin, symbolizing action, power, might.</text>
