<english>In ancient days You formed Your world, finishing Your labor on the seventh day. You loved us. You favored us, lifting us above all tongues. Through Your commandments You made us holy, drew us near, O our King, to Your service, and by Your great and holy name You called us. You also bestowed on us in love, LORD our God, Sabbaths for rest and New Moons for atonement. Yet because against You we and our ancestors sinned, our city was laid waste, our Sanctuary left desolate, our splendor banished, and the glory departed from our House of life. No longer can we discharge our obligations in Your chosen House, the great and holy Temple that bears Your name, because of the hand stretched forth against Your Sanctuary.</english>

<text>תִּכַּנְתָּ שַׁבָּת You instituted the Sabbath: The central blessing of the Amida focuses on the biblical passage describing the additional Sabbath sacrifice (Num. 28:9–10). Surrounding it are two prayers. The first, “You instituted the Sabbath,” opens with an acrostic: the initial letters of the first twenty-two words spell out the Hebrew alphabet in reverse. It continues with a prayer for the return of Jews to Israel and the restoration of the Temple service. The second, “Those who keep the Sabbath and call it a delight,” speaks of the joyous nature of the day of rest.</text>
