What follows, until “who sanctifies the Sabbath” (below), is left out when one prays with an occasional minyan or alone. Consult law 454. None is like the holy God /On Shabbat Shuva: the holy King/ who grants rest to His people on His holy Sabbath day, for He found them worthy of His favor to grant them rest. Before Him we shall approach in worship with reverence and awe, offering thanks to His name each day, continually, with fitting blessings. He is God to whom thanks are due, the LORD of peace who hallows the Sabbath and blesses the seventh day, and in holiness grants rest to a people filled with delight, recalling the work of creation.</english>

<text>מָגֵן אָבוֹת בִּדְבָרוֹ By His word, He was the Shield of our ancestors: A summary of the seven blessings of the Amida, which is unique to Friday evening. Tradition ascribes it to the fact that in Babylon – where synagogues were, for the most part, outside town – going home at night was fraught with danger. This prayer was added for the benefit of latecomers, so that the congregation could leave together.</text>
