<english>A psalm. For the Sabbath day, a song. Good it is to thank the LORD and sing psalms to Your name, Most High – to recount Your loving-kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness at night, with the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For by Your work You have made me rejoice, O LORD; at the deeds of Your hands I sing for joy. Your deeds, LORD, how great they are, and how very deep Your thoughts. Neither can a boor know, nor can a fool understand, that the wicked, though they spring up like grass, and all evildoers flourish, are so only that they may be destroyed for ever. But You, LORD, stand exalted eternally. For behold Your enemies, LORD; Your enemies, behold, will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. Like that of a wild ox You have raised my pride; with fresh oil I am anointed. In triumph my eyes shall look on my adversaries; my ears shall hear the downfall of the wicked who rise against me. Like a palm tree the righteous will flourish and like a cedar in Lebanon grow tall. In the LORD’s House planted, in our God’s courtyards blossoming, they will still bear fruit in old age, remaining vigorous and fresh, proclaiming that the LORD is upright: my Rock is He, in whom there is no wrong.</english>

<text>At that time, people looking back at history will see that though evil flourished “like grass,” it was short-lived, while the righteous grow slowly but stand tall “like the cedar of Lebanon.” Because our time perspective is short, we seem to inhabit a world in which evil prevails. Were we able to see history as a whole, we would know that good wins the final victory; in the long run justice prevails.</text>

<text>מִזְמוֹר שִׁיר לְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath day: This psalm, sung by the Levites on Shabbat, was already understood by the sages as “a song for the time to come, for the day that will be all Shabbat and rest in life everlasting.” Shabbat is not merely a day of rest, it is a rehearsal, within time, for the age beyond time when humanity, guided by the call of God, moves beyond strife, evil and oppression, to create a world of harmony, respecting the integrity of creation as God’s work, and the human person as God’s image.</text>
