<english>[We thank You also] for the miracles, the deliverance, the powerful acts, the salvations, the marvels, the comforts and the battle-triumphs which You wrought for our forebears in those days, at this season. During the time of Mattityahu, son of Yoḥanan, the High Priest, the Hasmonean, and his sons, the wicked Greek kingdom arose against Your people Israel to cause them to forget Your Torah and compel them to violate the decrees of Your will. Then, in Your abundant compassion, You stood with them in their hour of trouble. You took up their cause, adjudged their plea, and requited their injury. You placed the strong in the power of the weak, the many in the power of the few, the impure in the power of the pure, the wicked in the power of the righteous, and the arrogant in the power of those occupied with studying Your Torah. You fashioned for Yourself great and holy fame in Your world, and for Your people Israel You wrought a mighty salvation and redemption even as this very day. Thereafter Your children entered the most holy place of Your House, made clean Your Temple, rendered pure Your Sanctuary, lit lights in Your holy courts, and appointed these eight days of Ḥanukka for thanksgiving and praise to Your great name.</english>

When Mordekhai and Esther lived, in Shushan the capital, the wicked Haman arose against them and sought to destroy, slay and annihilate all the Jews, the young and the old, children and women, in a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, namely the month of Adar, and to seize their possessions.
