<english>In the month of Eitanim, during the Festival (that is, in the seventh month), all the people of Israel assembled before King Solomon. All the elders of Israel arrived; and the Priests were carrying the Ark with them. The Priests and Levites carried the Ark of the LORD, the Tent of Meeting, and every holy vessel that had been in it, up [to the top of Mount Zion]. And King Solomon, and the whole people of Israel that came with him before the Ark, presented offerings from the flock and from the herd; so numerous were these offerings that they could neither be counted nor listed. The priests set the Ark of the LORD's Covenant in its place: in the Sanctuary of the House – in the Holy of Holies – beneath the shade of the Cherubim's wings. For the Cherubim spread their wings over the Ark's place; and from above they covered the Ark and its poles. The poles themselves reached outward, their ends visible from the Holy Place, the Sanctuary, yet they could not be seen from outside; and there they remain to this day. Nothing else was in the Ark save the two stone tablets Moses had set there at Horev, which the LORD had hewed out with the children of Israel when they departed Egypt. And when the Priests departed the Holy Place, the cloud filled the House of the LORD. And the Priests were unable to remain standing to minister on account of the cloud – seeing that the LORD's glory filled the LORD's House.</english>

<text>HAFTARA FOR THE SECOND DAY OF SUKKOT Four hundred and eighty years after the exodus, King Solomon set in motion the building of the Temple, bringing the entire journey of slavery-to-freedom to its culmination. The nation now had a land, a king, and a capital city, Jerusalem. But there was as yet no permanent home for God at the spiritual center-point of the nation. The plan to build a Temple had been conceived by King David, but he was told by God, through the prophet Nathan, that it would be his son who would build it (II Sam. 7). The idea of such a sanctuary had been anticipated long before, in the Song at the Sea, at a critical moment in the exodus itself: "You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of Your inheritance – the place, LORD, You made for Your dwelling, the sanctuary, LORD, Your hands established" (Ex. 15:17).</text>
