And you shall take joy on your festival: you and your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levite, the stranger, the orphan and the widow sojourning within your gates. Seven days you shall keep festival for the LORD your God at the site which the LORD shall choose, because the LORD your God will bless you in all your produce and in all your undertakings; and you shall be altogether joyful. Thrice each year every male among you shall come into the presence of the LORD your God at the place He will choose: on Pesaḥ, Shavuot and Sukkot. None shall appear before the LORD empty-handed. Each shall present such a gift as he is able, according to the blessing the LORD your God grants you.</english>

<english>This day he will stop at Nob; he will brandish his hand, mountain of the daughter of Zion, hill of Jerusalem. Behold, the sovereign LORD of hosts will hew off the boughs with an axe. The tall trees will be cut down, the lofty ones brought low. He will fell the forest thickets with an axe. Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One. From the stump of Jesse a shoot will spring; from his roots a branch will bear fruit. Upon him the spirit of the LORD shall rest – a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and awe of the LORD, and in the fear of the LORD he shall delight. He will not judge according to the sight of his eyes, nor decide according to the hearing of his ears; in justice he shall judge the poor, and in equity defend the humble of the land. He shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth; by the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the belt about him and faithfulness</english>

Halakhically there is a mitzva of simḥa on Pesaḥ, but it comes on the first day(s) mixed with the taste of affliction and bitterness (matza and maror) and on the last with the memory of the Egyptians who died at the Sea of Reeds, and as Proverbs 24:17 states, "Do not rejoice when your enemy falls" (Yalkut Shimoni, Emor, 654).</text>
