<english>and present a fire-offering to the LORD. On this day you may perform no work, for it is a Day of Atonements, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. For any soul that does not afflict itself on this very day will be cut off from its people. And any soul that does any work on this very day - that soul I shall cause to perish from among its people. You shall perform no work - a perpetual ordinance this is for all your generations in all your dwellings. It is a Sabbath of Sabbaths for you; from the ninth of the month in the evening you shall afflict your souls; until the following evening you shall rest on your Sabbath.</english>

<english>The LORD addressed Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: On the fifteenth of this seventh month a Festival of Booths for the LORD shall be held, lasting seven days. On the first day a sacred assembly shall be held; you shall perform no laborious work. For seven days, you shall bring fire-offerings to the LORD; on the eighth day a sacred assembly will be held, and you shall bring another fire-offering to the LORD - it is a day of gathering; you shall perform no laborious work. These are the LORD's appointed times which you shall proclaim as days of sacred assembly, bringing to the LORD fire-offerings: burnt-offerings, meal-offerings, peace-offerings and wine-libations, according to each day's ordinance, besides the LORD's Sabbath offerings, your donated offerings, and every vow and freewill offering which you may present to the LORD. But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather in the land's harvest, you shall celebrate the LORD's holiday seven days; the first day shall be a rest day, and the eighth a rest day likewise. And on the first day, take for yourselves palm fronds, a fruit of the citron tree, myrtle branches and willows of the brook, and rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. You shall celebrate it, a holiday for the LORD, seven days each year - a perpetual ordinance this is for all your generations - in the seventh month you shall celebrate it. For seven days you shall dwell in booths; all native-born among Israel shall dwell in booths, so that your descendants will know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them forth from the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God. And Moses declared all of the LORD's festivals to the children of Israel.</english>

<text>לְמַעַן יֵדְעוּ דֹרֹתֵיכֶם So that your descendants will know. As well as marking the cycle of seasons and the agricultural year, the festivals are also times of remembering and reenacting the history of the nation and handing on that memory across the generations. To be a Jew is to live history, celebrating the present in the context of past and future, memory and hope.</text>
