"english": "For the choirmaster. Belonging to Korah’s sons. A sacred song. Hear this, all you peoples. Give ear, all who dwell in the world, high and low, poor and rich together. My mouth shall utter words of wisdom; what my heart speaks will yield understanding. I attend carefully to a parable; I set forth my mystery to the harp’s music. Why should I be afraid when days of evil arrive, when my enemies’ wickedness encircles me, they who trust in their wealth, who boast of their vast riches? None can redeem his brother or pay God the sum of his ransom, for a life’s redemption is costly; no payment ever suffices for him to live for ever, never to behold the grave. For everyone sees that the wise die, that the foolish and the mindless perish alike and leave their riches to others. They imagine their houses will stand for ever, their dwellings through every generation; they attach their names to their lands. Yet man, for all his splendor, does not last; he resembles the animals that perish. This is the lot of the foolish and of those who follow them, approving their words, Selah. Like sheep they are appointed to the grave: death shall shepherd them. The upright shall have dominion over them when morning comes. Their forms shall waste within the grave, remote from their palaces. Yet God will ransom my life out of the grave; surely He will take me unto Himself, Selah. Do not be daunted when a man grows wealthy, when his household’s glory swells, for he carries nothing away at death; his riches will not go down with him. Though in life he reckoned himself blessed – people always laud you in your prosperity – he shall join his ancestors’ generation, who never again will see the light. A man who, for all his splendor, is without understanding, resembles the animals that perish.",

Confronted with an awareness of our mortality, we begin to rethink our priorities, knowing that what occupy our energies and thoughts much of the time, are often matters of relatively minor significance when weighed against the fullness of eternity and the brevity of our lives on earth. Psalm 49 is a most powerful expression of this idea. What lives on after us is not our wealth but the ideals for which we live and the good we do."
