          <english>A psalm of David. A hymn upon the dedication of the House. I will extol You, LORD, for You have raised me up, and have not let my foes rejoice over me. LORD, my God, I cried to You for aid and You healed me. LORD, You raised my soul from the grave; You kept me from going down to the pit. Sing to the LORD, you His faithful ones, and offer thanks to His holy name. For His anger lasts a moment, but His favor a lifetime. Weeping may come at night, yet joy comes in the morning. In my security I said, “I shall never be shaken.” LORD, in Your favor You made me stand firm as a mountain, yet once You hid Your face, terror seized me. To You, LORD, I cried; I made plea to my LORD: “What profit would there be were I to die and descend to the grave? Can the dust thank You? Can it proclaim Your truth? Hear, LORD, and show me grace; LORD, be my help.” You have turned my mourning into dancing. You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my soul may sing to You and not keep silent. LORD my God, for evermore will I thank You.</english>

One who walks with integrity, acts with righteousness, and utters the truth from his heart; who bears no malice on his tongue, does no harm to his fellow, nor slurs his neighbor; who despises those who are vile, yet honors those who fear the LORD; who holds to his oath even when it hurts; who does not exact interest on his loans and never accepts a bribe against the innocent. <text>The Torah mentions the dedication of a house: “The officials shall say to the troops: Has anyone built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may dedicate it” (Deut. 20:5). There are also descriptions of the consecration of the altar (Numbers, chapter 7) and of the Temple (I Kings, chapter 8).</text>

          <type>Commentary</type>
          <text>No formal ceremony for the consecration of a house is mentioned in the early rabbinic literature, other than saying Sheheḥeyanu (“Who has given us life, sustained us, and brought us to this day”) and the blessing on fixing the mezuza. The current ceremony is a longstanding part of Anglo-Jewish custom. A service for the consecration of a house was compiled by Chief Rabbi Solomon Hirschell; another was compiled by Chief Rabbi Dr. Hermann Adler, which is the basis of the present text.</text>
        </footer>
        <footer>
          <type>Commentary</type>
          <text>Where appropriate, the ceremony should begin with the fixing of mezuzot with the appropriate blessing, together with Sheheḥeyanu (pages 1053 and 1049).</text>
        </footer>

          <type>Commentary</type>
          <text>Psalm 30 is then recited because of its superscription, “A song for the dedication of the House.” Psalm 15 speaks of the qualities required for “dwelling in the tent” of God – “tent” being understood by the sages (as in “How beautiful are your tents, Jacob”) as a metaphor for the Jewish home.</text>
