Let those the LORD redeemed declare this – those He redeemed from the foe’s hand, those He assembled from the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south. Some wandered lost in desert wastes, finding no path to a city where they could dwell. Hungry and thirsty were they, and their spirit grew faint. Then, in their trouble, they cried out to the LORD, and from their distress He rescued them. By a straight path He led them to a city in which they could dwell. Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love and the wonders He has done for humankind, for the thirsty He satisfies and the hungry He fills with good. Some sat in darkness and death’s shadow, bound cruelly in chains of iron, for against God’s words they had rebelled, and scorned the Most High’s counsel. With hard labor He humbled their hearts; they stumbled, and none was there to help. Then, in their trouble, they cried to the LORD, and He delivered them out of their distress. Out of darkness and death’s shadow He brought them, and broke their chains apart. Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love and the wonders He has done for humankind, for bronze gates He shattered and their iron bars He broke. Some were fools in sinful ways, and by their iniquities they suffered affliction. All food they found repulsive, and they drew near the gates of death. Then, in their trouble, they cried to the LORD, and He delivered them out of their distress. He sent forth His word and healed them; from their destruction He rescued them. Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving-kindness and His wondrous",

The longest exile ever endured by a people was at an end. For the first time in two millennia Jews had a home in the sense given by the poet Robert Frost, a place that, “when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Jews had once again returned to the arena of history as a self-determining nation in the land to which Abraham journeyed in his day, and Moses and the Israelites in theirs."
